Our Travel Connections
Connect with the best of New Zealand's tourist destinations and activities by using our Stopovers and Throughfares
Throughfares & Stopovers
The Great Journeys of New Zealand connect across New Zealand, taking you from Auckland to Greymouth and beyond. Using our online Booking system you can connect together thoroughfares and insert stopovers to build your scenic holiday.
So, let us do the driving, and allow yourself the chance to simply sit back, relax, and enjoy the best of New Zealand.
Our Scenic Plus Class fares include free Stopovers, which means you can break your journey along the way.
You must book your Stopovers at least three days in advance - and we recommend booking them all at once to guarantee your seats.
Adding Stopovers while booking is simple:
- Go to Book Scenic train
- Select your starting point
- Select your final destination
- Click "Continue"
- Click on the "+Add A Stop" button
- Select the station where you wish to stop
- Choose a leaving date
- Repeat until all desired Stopovers are added
Please call our Contact Centre if you wish to add Stopovers to an existing booking
Connecting your journey with Stopovers
The following stations can be connected together using free Stopovers, from north to south:
You can string multiple travel experiences from The Great Journeys of New Zealand together to create a Throughfare.
Our Throughfares enable you to build a connected New Zealand rail journey from Auckland to Greymouth. When connecting between islands, your journey will include the phenomenal Interislander Wellington to Picton ferry for an unforgettable voyage through the Marlborough Sounds.
Our Interislander ferries also offer a Plus Lounge experience on certain sailings that you can upgrade to if desired. You can also choose Scenic Plus Class fares on Coastal Pacific and TranzAlpine services, or mix and match Scenic Class and Scenic Plus Class journeys.
We also partner with InterCity coaches to connect you beyond the tracks. Our InterCity Throughfares can connect you all the way to Fox, Franz Joseph and Queenstown.
