Your adventure begins aboard the world-famous TranzAlpine, departing Christchurch in the early morning. Over the next four hours, you'll enjoy an astonishing journey, meandering through intimate river valleys and beneath soaring mountain peaks, as you wind your way from coast to coast.
After crossing the Southern Alps, your destination is New Zealand's West Coast. Here you will discover an untamed world of rugged geological architecture. A land sculpted by the harsh meteorological conditions, pounded over millions of years.
Day 1: Morning
Climbing aboard the TranzAlpine in the early morning, you'll enjoy Morning Tea while watching a boundless patchwork of fields and paddocks pass by your window. This is the vast Canterbury Plains, punctuated in the west by the looming Torlesse mountains that push the TranzAlpine north into the Waimakariri River valley. Skirting around the steep banks of the ice-blue river, the TranzAlpine dives in and out of tunnels and across breathtaking viaducts before carving through narrow mountain passes as it ascends into the Alps.
Squealing through tight turns and heaving up steep gradients, the TranzAlpine spills out on to the high plains of Cragieburn, surrounded by magnificent peaks and glistening mountain lakes. Step outside and breathe in the mountain atmosphere from the TranzAlpine's Open-air Viewing carriage. This is the sensational climax of your TranzAlpine journey.
After easing into Arthur's Pass for a short pause, you'll then descend into the 8.5km Otira Tunnel. Emerging from the darkness on the far side of the Main Divide, you'll witness firsthand the effect the damper West Coast climate has on the scenery. Winding through river valleys with imposing bush-clad hills rising above, you can settle back and enjoy your TranzAlpine Lunch while watching a luscious green world pass by. On the final stretch, you'll pass the immaculate Lake Brunner and peaceful Lake Poerua before joining the Grey River.
On arrival in Greymouth in the early afternoon, one of our hosts will meet you and take you onward to your accommodation where you can get ready for your afternoon adventure.
Day 1: Afternoon
After an exhilarating morning traversing the Southern Alps, what could be better than an enlightening tour of the West Coast's famous Monteith’s Brewery? With a 150-year history dating back to the dawn of West Coast industry, Monteith's Brewery is a New Zealand institution. During your Monteith's Brewery experience, you'll be taken on a journey through the heritage, traditions, and techniques of this famous marque. You will experience and taste their ever-changing and innovative beers - some of which are exclusively brewed and sold in the adjoining Monteith's Brewing Company bar.
You will now be an expert in brewing and tasting beer, so why not settle down for the evening in the brewery's Gastropub. With a West Coast menu inspired by the sea, bush and land, there is something delicious for everyone, and many dishes are designed to complement specific Monteith’s beers (please note that dinner is not included in your package).
Day 2: Morning
Fuel up for the day with breakfast at your accommodation before setting off on a West Coast adventure.
On day two, you will be escorted around the wonders of the West Coast on the Best of the West day trip. Travelling the world-famous Coast Road, rated one of the top ten coastal drives in the world, you'll start your day exploring the enigmatic Punakaiki Blow Holes and Pancake Rocks. One of the wonders of the world, this geological marvel was forged by raging seas, violent winds and tectonic upheaval over millions of years.
The next natural wonder on your West Coast tour is Hokitika Gorge. Here you will take a short walk through native rimu and podocarp forest to reach the viewing platform overlooking the gorge's astonishingly vibrant blue waters. With a little extra effort, you can walk down to the suspension bridge for an even closer view of this stunning attraction. It is a tranquil setting and highly regarded as a West Coast must-do activity.
You'll finish your day by wandering spectacularly amongst the treetops on the Tree Top Walkway. Situated alongside Lake Mahinapua, this accessible walkway takes you through ageing native rimu and miro trees that tower up to 35 metres. Bellbirds, tui, grey warbler, fantail, and kereru play amongst these giants, whistling their beautiful songs while you stroll around these atmospheric walkways. If you are feeling bold, you can also climb the 40-metre high Tower to get a stunning birdseye view of the park and the majestic Lake Mahinapua.
Day 3: Morning
After enjoying a relaxing breakfast at your accommodation, you'll have the morning to explore Greymouth at your leisure. A few recommended activities include:
- Take a stroll along the floodwall to Greymouth's coastal shoreline. Strewn with semi-precious stones and strangely shaped driftwood, this wild coast is home to Hector's dolphins that are often seen playing in the mouth of the Grey River.
- Explore the accessible walkways at Port Elizabeth, Coal Creek, and many others, featuring beautiful bush and sea views.
- Discover active gold-digging sites - simply enquire at the i-Site located in the station, and they will let you know of any active prospecting in the local streams.
- Step back in time at Shantytown. Located south of Greymouth, this reconstructed mining town takes you back to Greymouth's golden era!
Day 3: Afternoon
Come early afternoon, one of our hosts will collect you from your hotel and transfer you back to Greymouth station. If you like, you can have lunch and a drink in the Speight's Ale House next to the station while waiting for the TranzAlpine train.
You will then spend the afternoon enjoying Afternoon Tea aboard the TranzAlpine while returning to Christchurch.
