  • Auckland and surrounding regions on Alert Level 3; the rest of New Zealand at Alert Level 2
  • Northern Explorer services suspended until further notice
  • Service Alerts are also active for Coastal Pacific and TranzAlpine

Northern Explorer Temporarily Suspended

With Auckland and surrounding regions at COVID-19 Alert Level 3 and the rest of New Zealand at Alert Level 2, we are unable to operate our Scenic trains. 

At this stage, our TranzAlpine, Coastal Pacific, and Northern Explorer train services all remain suspended.

We are actively contacting passengers to notify them of cancellations as they are confirmed. Currently, services up to and including the 13th December 2021 have been cancelled. 

 

When will the Northern Explorer train begin running again?

There’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes for our train journeys; that’s what makes them special, but also makes them challenging to plan in this changing environment.

With the added complexities of the Delta variant comes increased risk and revised regulations. We are assessing the new requirements around face coverings, physical distancing, and food and drink provision under the current Alert Level conditions.

First and foremost, we want to ensure that our services are safe and comfortable for customers and crew. Furthermore, as New Zealand's national rail service, we also have an important role in protecting against inter-regional spread.   

So please bear with us whilst we ensure we are making the right decision for our customers, our crew, and New Zealand as a whole.

 

Cancellations and Refunds

All Scenic train fares are fully flexible and refundable, and our customer care team is contacting any bookings affected by cancellations during these latest Alert Level restrictions.

If you are unable to travel due to COVID-19 restrictions or would like to delay your rail experience, then simply use our online contact details below to make your request. 

 

Staying up-to-date

We will provide updates via our website, customer contact centre, and social media as soon as we decide on resuming our services. 

If you are booked to travel, then our Customer Care team will be in touch if make make the difficult decision to cancel your train.

Scheduled maintenance

Routine maintenance of our train booking system is taking place between 8pm and 9pm, on Thursday 25th November (7am – 8am UTC).

Access to the booking system will be removed during this timeframe. If you are wishing to book one of our train services then we kindly ask you return once the upgrade has been completed.
