With so much on offer, you are likely to have some questions. We have a dedicated Nautical Miles team on hand to help. However, before you pick up the phone or send an email, it is possible we already have the answer to your question.

So please read through the following frequently asked questions: 

 

Can I use the benefits as soon as I join?

Once you have joined the programme you can start earning Nautical Miles Dollars straight away.

Your membership pack will be posted to you and should arrive within two weeks.

The membership pack includes your membership card and vouchers (such as Plus Lounge passes, coffee vouchers, etc.) and other key information on the programme. 

You must carry your membership and accompanying Photo ID to show at check-in to use any of our Priority Services. 

Plus Lounge passes can only be redeemed on board and you will need to wait for them to be delivered before they can be used. Please visit the onboard shop to redeem your Plus Lounge passes. Unfortunately, space is not guaranteed. 

How do I earn and spend Nautical Miles Dollars?

Whenever you book and travel using your Nautical Miles Loyalty Programme membership, you will earn Nautical Miles Dollars. The amount you earn will depend on which tier you are in.

  • Gold Members earn 2 Nautical Dollars for every $10 spent
  • Silver Members earn 1 Nautical Dollars for every $10 spent
  • Members earn 1 Nautical Dollars for every $10 spent

When checking in, you will need to provide your Membership Card and accompanying Photo ID in order to earn Nautical Dollars. Your earnings will be available in your Member portal, ‘The Porthole’, within 24 hours of travel.

Your Nautical Dollars can be used to pay or part pay for any future Interislander booking. 

When renewing a Silver or Gold membership, your Nautical Dollars will automatically carryover. 

Bronze member Nautical Dollars will not carryover and will expire after 12 months.

 

Nautical Miles Dollars have no monetary value and can not be exchanged for cash or any other services. 

 

Using your Nautical Dollars after your membership lapses

Your Nautical Dollars can be used for a limited time after your membership expires. 

When your membership expires, your account will change to "Redeem Only".

Any existing Nautical Miles Dollars will remain available for you to use until they expire (12 months after they were earned) or your Redeem Only account closes.

A Redeem Only account closes automatically after six months. Once closed, all Nautical Dollars are removed.

You can upgrade from a Redeem Only account to any of the three Membership tiers.  Your Nautical Dollars will then remain available until they expire (12 months after accrual). 

You cannot earn Nautical Dollars for travelling with a Redeem Only account.

Can I use my remaining Nautical Dollars and vouchers after my membership expires?

When your membership nears expiry, we'll send you a reminder to renew. 

Silver and Gold membership renewals will have their Nautical Miles Dollars and remaining vouchers carried over and their renewal allocation will be issued (e.g. Gold members will receive two more Plus Lounge passes, five more coffee vouchers, 10 additional Nautical Dollars, etc).

Bronze renewals will also carry over their Nautical Dollars. However, they will expire 12 months after they were earned. 

What happens if you do not renew?

Gold members:
  • At the end of your 12-month membership, you can choose to downgrade to Silver or Bronze. 
  • If you downgrade to Silver, your Nautical Miles Dollars will carryover and you will receive your Silver renewal allocation (eg. 1 x Plus Lounge Pass, 5 x Nautical Dollars, etc). 
  • Downgrading to Bronze will mean your Nautical Miles Dollars will carryover, but they will also expire 12 months after they were earned
  • You will automatically be downgraded to Bronze if you fail to renew
  • You can reinstate your Gold Membership by rejoining within six-months of expiry. Your Membership Anniversary will be reset, your rejoining awards will be issued and your Nautical Miles Dollars will be carried over with no expiry. 
Silver members:
  • At the end of your 12-month membership, you can choose to downgrade to Bronze. 
  • Downgrading to Bronze will mean your Nautical Miles Dollars will carryover, but they will also expire 12 months after they were earned
  • You will automatically be downgraded to Bronze if you fail to renew

How do I redeem my Plus Lounge voucher and other free vouchers?

Gold and Silver members will receive vouchers to the Plus Lounge and Queen Charlotte Lounge (available on Kaitaki only), as well as coffee vouchers.  The vouchers will be sent to you in your membership pack.

  • To redeem your Plus Lounge voucher, you must present this at the Plus Lounge when making a booking, these cannot be booked in advance, only on the ship at the time of travel.
  • For the Queen Charlotte Lounge voucher please present this to the reception desk on the Kaitaki to receive access, you will also receive the $5 voucher for onboard spend with the Queen Charlotte Lounge voucher.
  • To redeem the coffee voucher, simply hand this over to the café or restaurant staff when ordering.

How is the Nautical Miles Loyalty Programme different from the old programme?

The new Nautical Miles Loyalty Programme offer three tiers of membership. For each tier, members now receive increased rewards (Nautical Miles Dollars). For the highest tier (Gold), this is twice as much as you used to receive in the last programme, allowing you to use the extra Nautical Miles Dollars for travel on the Interislander.

Why would I pay for a membership when I can join Bronze membership for free?

The Bronze membership is free because we don’t want anyone to miss out in joining the programme, but unlike the Silver and Gold memberships, there will be no other rewards or benefits in joining the programme apart from earning Nautical Miles Dollars.

I am already a member; how will the change in the programme affect me?

When your current membership expires you will need to join the programme either as Gold, Silver or Bronze membership.

 

How much is it to join the new programme?

Gold membership is $125 per membership year (12 months). Silver is $75 per membership year (12 months). Bronze is free per membership (12 months).

 

What do I get when I join the programme?

Once you have joined the programme you can start earning Nautical Miles Dollars straight away. You will be posted your membership pack that includes your membership card. The membership pack will also include vouchers for you to redeem you rewards as a member, such as (Plus Lounge vouchers, coffee vouchers etc. – Gold and Silver members only) and other key information on the programme. Please allow two weeks for delivery.

 

Once I have used my Plus Lounge Vouchers can I still get a discount for the Plus Lounge for future travel?

Gold and Silver members both receive future discounts for the Plus Lounges. For Gold members this also applies for all travellers accompanying them as well. The discounts received are 50% off the advertised retail price for Gold members, and 25% off the retail price for Silver members. Bronze members do not receive any Plus Lounge discounts.

 

Can transfer my membership? 

All membership tiers are non-transferable, and the rewards and benefits are only for the membership holder. 

 

Is priority disembarking always guaranteed?

Due to loading requirements, which can change each sailing, priority disembarking (Vehicles) cannot be guaranteed.

 

I am a new Gold member; how do I receive my free gift – Nautical Miles IdealCup?

We are offering all new Gold members, who sign up for a new membership, a free Nautical Miles Loyalty Programme branded IdealCup. To be more sustainable we will not be posting these to our new Gold members, but they can be collected next time you travel from any of the Interislander Plus Lounges. There will be an IdealCup voucher in your new membership pack for you to redeem next time you are travelling, just hand this over to the Interislander team and they will give you your free IdealCup.

 

What is the minimum age you have to be to join the Nautical Miles Loyalty Programme?

Application for Membership is open to persons over 18 years of age.

 

As a member what are the luggage rules?

Gold and Silver Members are entitled to priority luggage, this is three pieces of check-in luggage, instead of two when travelling on foot. Luggage does not include NON personal items.  NON personal items include, but not restricted to:

  • White bins or boxes full of pot plants (large pot plants), Tables and chairs, Washing machines, Beds. Large bags of dog biscuits…

All NON personal items will incur freight charges

 

Can I let someone borrow my membership card or vouchers to get the rewards?

No, we will be asking all Nautical Miles Loyalty Programme members to produce identification at check-in at the Interislander terminals and at redemption of the onboard lounge vouchers.
