We are all very excited about New Zealand moving into COVID-19 Alert Level 2. The generous freedoms given by the government’s Level 2 guidelines are a direct result of everyone’s individual commitment to the fight against COVID-19 - and something we can all be proud of. 

Like all tourism operators, we have been significantly affected by the collapse in international tourism, and whilst we look forward to welcoming even more locals, our assessment is that New Zealand will need to be at least Level 1 before services could resume in a sustainable way. We appreciate this situation is frustrating, and we acknowledge the patience being shown during these challenging times.  

We are acutely aware of the importance of our services to local businesses and regional economies, and of the role we play in connecting visitors with many of New Zealand’s towns, districts, and regions.

The Great Journeys of New Zealand and KiwiRail are working through some fresh ideas and ways to serve New Zealand tourism while providing our guests with an enchanting and relaxing experience.

COVID-19 cancellation update (21-04-2020)

The Great Journeys of New Zealand trains are currently suspended during the nationwide fight against COVID-19 and the resulting travel restrictions. 

From 23 March 2020 to 30 June 2020, our TranzAlpine, Northern Explorer and Coastal Pacific trains are cancelled and the services will remain suspended until further notice. 

We are continuing to monitor the fast-evolving situation closely, and we will resume running the three trains as soon as we can. 

These are unprecedented times for our business and for New Zealand as a whole. We thank our customers and the public for their patience during this period of uncertainty. 


Full refunds will be available for impacted customers where we have cancelled services. We will be in touch with you as soon as we can.

Refunds will apply for travel dates from 23 March 2020 through to 30 June 2020.

If you booked directly on or via our call centre for travel from 1 July 2020 onwards then our standard fare terms and conditions remain unaffected.

If you booked through a travel agent, please contact them directly as we are unable to amend these bookings.
