Baggage allowances

When travelling on foot, you'll need to ensure your luggage fits within our baggage allowances. Reading our policies before arriving will help ensure you sail through Check-In.

Important information

Please pack a small day-bag or handbag to carry on board. See our Travel tips for information on what to bring.

Your luggage allowance:

  • Carry-on: one small bag and one handbag/laptop bag
  • Check-in: two (2) items of check-in luggage per person
  • Bag limits: 32kg / 200 linear centimetres per bag
  • Excess luggage: $5 per item

Carry-on baggage

We recommend you pack everything you might need for the journey into a small bag or handbag to bring aboard. See our Travel tips for information on what to bring.

You are allowed to bring one small bag plus one handbag or laptop bag. 

Carry-on bag limits are:

  • Maximum weight: 7kg
  • Maximum size: 118 linear centimetres(height + length + width)

For the safety and comfort of everyone on board, large bags are not allowed in our passenger areas. 

 

Check-in luggage

Foot passengers can check their luggage in at the desks inside the terminal (in Wellington you can use the check-in desks, in Picton there is a separate luggage desk).

Each passenger may check-in two bags as standard, Additional bags may be added at $5 per item.

Check-in luggage limits are:

  • Maximum 2 pieces per person
  • Maximum weight 32 kilograms per item
  • Maximum size 200 linear centimetres (height + length + width) 

 If you are transferring to the Coastal Pacific train, notify the check-in staff and they will label your baggage for the onward journey. Your bags will be transferred to the Coastal Pacific for you, whilst you make the short walk to the station.

 

Musical instruments

Musical instruments are subject to our standard luggage regulations.

Any musical instruments weighing more than 7kg or larger than 118 linear centimetres will need to be checked in. We will, of course, take the utmost care of your instrument, treating it as fragile and storing it separately from standard luggage. 

 

Excess luggage charges

  • $5 per additional item
  • Standard luggage restrictions apply
  • Subject to availability

 

Oversized Baggage

Bags over 32kg or 200 linear centimetres cannot be accepted.

 

Sporting equipment

Oversized sporting equipment can be added to your booking at $15 per item.

Items include:

  • Surfboards
  • Golf clubs
  • Canoes
  • Cricket bags
  • Kit bags
  • Horse whips

 

Bicycles

Bicycles can be added to your booking for $15.

All of our ships have bicycle racks in the vehicle decks for storing and locking bikes (please bring your own bike lock). Rack space is limited, so we recommend booking in advance. 

 

Household goods, freight & unaccompanied luggage

We only carry personal luggage and sporting equipment.

Please contact a courier service if you need to transport household goods, freight or unattended luggage.
