Bringing together the Greatest Stages on Earth

Our partnership with World of WearableArt brings together the greatest stages on earth. From the surreal and fantastic to the elegant and organic, our shared passion for taking people beyond the ordinary guides us on our journey together:

"There's a natural alignment between The Great Journeys of New Zealand and World of WearableArt. World of WearableArt gives designers a stage to showcase their work and we use New Zealand as the greatest stage on Earth."

- Ella Street, The Great Journeys of New Zealand

The world's Greatest Stage for Designers

To bring our partnership to life, in 2019 we invited finalist designer Stephanie Cossens to join us on an Interislander journey through the Marlborough Sounds along with her award-winning garment, Kākāpō Queen. The surreal scene of Kākāpō Queen coming to life on one of our most beautiful stages was a spectacular and special moment.

Stephanie Cossen's Kākāpō Queen appeared on stage in the Aotearoa section of the 2018 World of WearableArt Awards Show, coming second in the WETA Workshop Emerging Designer Award. Stephanie found inspiration for creating her garment from our beautiful big backyard, New Zealand.

“It was important for me to capture the strength and resilience of the Kākāpō as they have come back from the brink of extinction.  I wanted to be able to incorporate quite a sculptural element to my garment. I’m really interested in the relationship between the soft and textile aspect of the faux fur with this piece, and also incorporating the firm smoothness of the ceramics. It’s a nice juxtaposition of textures I enjoyed exploring.”

World of WearableArt Awards Show 2021 Cancellation Announcement

WOW GJoNZ packages asset

It is with great sadness, the current COVID-19 outbreak in Aotearoa has forced World of WearableArt to cancel the 2021 World of WearableArt Awards Show which was due to be on stage from 30 September to 17 October.

The 2021 World of WearableArt Awards Show was set to be an exciting spectacle bursting with colour, creativity, surprise, and delight. It was designed to blow away all 2020 cobwebs and celebrate anew. We were so close. Sadly, the current COVID-19 outbreak in Aotearoa forced WOW’s hand and on 30 August the postponement of the 2021 Show season was announced.

Since then WOW has been working closely with Wellington City Council and WellingtonNZ to try and find new dates. As we are sure you will appreciate, there are many, many layers of complexity involved in trying to reschedule an event of WOW’s scale. In the end WOW came to the conclusion that the risks were just too high. So despite the tireless efforts of all involved, it is with heavy hearts that we confirm that WOW have had to make the devastating decision to cancel the 2021 WOW Awards Show season.

The story of WOW began more than thirty years ago and since then this much-loved homegrown arts company has become a global creative movement like no other. While this current chapter is incredibly challenging, it is by no means the end of the story. WOW will be back and look forward to once again bringing artists and audiences together to celebrate creativity, possibility, and perseverance.

If you have already purchased a package, train or ferry journey to World of WearableArt Awards Show with us, we will be in contact soon with options available to you.
